I think it’s a good idea to offer such courses to the freshmen. Although library is filled with academic resources like reference books and journal articles, there’re so many of them that most freshmen feel at a loss to get access to the ones they need. Without proper guidance, students often end up learning such things on their own, which would cost much time that could otherwise be spent on more important things like reading for their papers. Besides, some people may argue that the school shouldn’t make such courses mandatory. However, freshmen may not take them seriously if they’re optional, I mean, how hard does it sound to just “search for the information in the library”? Yet once they take the class, they’re gonna find out that there’re lots of things to learn like how to filter tons of papers in the online database.
