I can't agree more.

First, some might say the best way to know about a country is to talk with the local. If it is true, learning the language is certainly necessary. Reading history books or attending lectures is pretty reliable, but they are somewhat boring and aloof. However, speaking with local people in their language enables me to get down-to-earth perspectives and real picture of how they live.

Second, language gives me a way to know the true character of the country through literarure. To understand a country, I could read the great works from different times, such as poems. Back in university, I just loved to sit on the steps to the library while reading a small poem written by Robert Frost. Probably this is the best possible answer of a country.
