In some families, children are required to do some chores since they are still very young, while in other families, parents prefer to take care of all of the chores and leave time for children to do their school work or hang out with their friends. Thus, there’s a heated discussion about whether it is necessary to ask children to do housework or it is a completely waste of time. From my perspective, it is important for children to do some household chores besides doing homework and playing.

To begin with, doing household chores could help children be more independent. It is a common scene nowadays that when students go to colleges, they still need help from their parents with their own chores, such as cleaning clothes, cleaning rooms, and so on. And they also eat most of their food in the restaurants to avoid cooking. This great dependence may impede their studying, since they need to consider when and how to get help from their parents. However, things could be different if parents could have asked them to do chores when they are young. For example, parents could ask them to take out the trash, fold their own clothes, make their own beds, and so on. All of these things will help children to learn some basic skills of taking care of themselves and thus they could be more independent in the future.
