Is teaching students how to learn by themselves the goal of most importance of education? Some believe so because there are far more things people have to learn outside school. From my perspective, however,it is an exaggeration to say that self-learning ability is most significant for other aims are also important.

It is true that self-education is an important ability. After all, the amount of knowledge is already huge enough and is quickly updating each day, so it is unrealistic to teach all of it in school. In other words, one still has a lot to learn after graduation. Therefore, a person has to learn new things on his or her own. For example, a translator studies a second language and translating skills at university, but the worker will face speeches about politics, culture, art, business and other industries, all of which are not taught comprehensively in a translation degree. Thus, to convey accurate messages of speakers, the translator has to learn alone information about the related field in advance. That said, it will be an overstatement to say that teaching people how to learn themselves is the most significant target of education, because other tasks are also essential.

A good education also prepares students for their future career. The basic goal of schooling is to equip students with literacy and numeracy; otherwise, they could not finish even the simplest task at work. More commonly, in current economy where the labor is highly divided, a worker needs a good knowledge of a specific field. Also, in almost every advertisement in job markets there is a requirement regarding college major. Therefore, a well-developed school should teach students a wealth of professional information meeting the demands of industry and society, and build a solid academic base for their career development in the future.
