Success, broadly defined, means to fulfill personal goals and aspirations that imbue us with a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Achieving success often requires that we be readily open to new ideas and experiences, taking unforeseen risks and blazing our own self-determined paths. While, as with any risk, there is always something at stake, having the courage to step out of our comfort zones affords us the possibility of feeling truly empowered, both through overcoming obstacles and discovering new opportunities.

Taking risks can certainly be intimidating, as there are no guarantees of a positive outcome, but simply cowering away from potential challenges renders little progress. Venturing out into new, unpredictable territory stimulates us to think boldly and creatively, producing novel solutions to larger-scale problems. One prominent example of a fearless risk-taker is the lifelong civil rights activist, Yuri Kochiyama. A Japanese-American woman who experienced the horrors of internment camps and lived in impoverished housing projects in New York, Kochiyama was determined to make a difference. Though activists were often arrested, she participated in the African American civil rights movement and also pushed for the signing of the Civil Liberties Act. For her tireless dedication, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and inspired a generation of activists. For Kochiyama, success meant risking arrests, threats, and especially her public reputation. Had she been too cautious, she may not have made an impact, but through risk-taking and courage, she created the societal change she desired and improved countless lives.
