Personal development is a lifelong process. It is a way for people to assess their skills, consider their aims in life and set goals in order to maximize their potential both in academic field or in career. Both ways mentioned in the topic will help. However, as far as I’m concerned, participating more actively or stating more personal opinions in group discussion is a more effective approach.

For students to achieve better academic performance, they need to understand how schools design and conduct evaluation. Generally speaking, school evaluation not only involves students’ academic ability, but also puts emphasis on their attendance, sense of responsibility and the ability to work in a group, etc. Obviously, such qualities can easily be shown during the process of engaging in group discussion. Whether or not the student is proactive enough, or whether the student can listen to other people’s opinions and provide effective response or statements definitely tell a lot about this student’s comprehensive ability, which ought be considered when teachers decide the final grade of each student.

Everyone wants to move up the career ladder, but how can you stand out from the crowd? When a promotion is on the line, one strategy is to do more work than your peers. Another strategy is to be an idea generator for the team. While both are helpful, I think the best strategy is to generate ideas.

These days, innovative ideas are more important than extra hours of work. The market changes constantly in the internet age, so companies need to diligently research and consistently reinvent themselves in order to keep consumers’ attention. In the U.S., Coca Cola got the idea to start shipping bottles with common first names on the labels. This simple and innovative idea cost the company almost nothing but produced a huge spike in Coca Cola sales. People were even ordering online to get bottles with their name on it.

Additionally, brainstorming ideas with colleagues helps you get into the social circle at work. While companies would like employees to believe that promotions are handed out on an impersonal system, nothing can be truly impersonal as long as humans are involved. If you’re always socializing with the decision makers at a company, you’ll be at the front of their minds when an opportunity comes up. While they probably won’t make a decision entirely based on people they personally like, it can certainly help if it comes down to a tough decision between you and another employee who hasn’t put effort into socializing.
