以下是托福独立写作范文:
When a city is full of historical buildings and attractions, the government is often facing a dilemma whether it should put more money to preserve the past or more funding should be devoted to constructing new houses. Some may argue that making new houses available to more citizens should always occupy the most important position in the government’s decisions, since people who are living right now matter more than anything else. However, from my perspective, the fund actually should be better employed to preserve historical or traditional buildings.
To begin with, preserving old buildings could make the city or the country unique. It is usually history which makes us who we are. So are cities and countries. For example, without the old buildings in Xi’an, like the City Wall, the Terra-Cotta Worriers and Horses, the Bell Tower, and the Drum Tower showing the prosperity of the past, Xi’an would be no different from New York City or San Francisco, because all of those cities are filled with concrete match-box-like buildings and unfortunately, all the new buildings will be the same as well. However, proper funding, which can ensure the survival of those historical buildings for at least another century, protects the historical image of Xi’an, which shows the traditional Chinese culture and the fusion of different cultures due to the frequent exchange of cultures in the past. Showing perfectly contrast between the ancient and the modern gives Xi’an an image distinguishable from other cities in the world.
Moreover, providing funding for traditional buildings could help government make more money. Some may point out that making more new buildings available could actually bring fortune to the government, since there’s an increasing need for places to live with a larger and larger population. But as most of those buildings are supposed to be part of the basic needs of people, the price cannot be too high to afford. Thus the government shouldn’t be expected to earn plenty of money from this. However, preserving traditional buildings could bring millions and millions of visitors home and abroad every year, which, in turn, will encourage the development of various industries, like food and drinks industries, tourism, transportation, souvenirs manufacturing, etc. This could mean a large sum of money from taxes every year and thus the government could have a constant inflow of money to support various kinds of public welfare.
