People are facing tons of assignments every day and in order to achieve a promotion or a better grade, they are constantly finding ways to improve the quality of their assignments, including seeking feedback from coworkers and classmates. Therefore, everybody plays the role of providing and receiving feedback all the time. When giving feedback, some people prefer to point out the problems first, since they believe those things can really help their classmates or coworkers improve and thus are more critical than compliments. However, from my perspective, expressing compliments before negative feedback can actually work better.
To begin with, compliment first could help people build their confidence. When people just complete their task, most of them are quite proud of themselves, since they have, at least, succeeded in finishing the task given, after all those time and effort they have poured in. Therefore, they are more in the mood of receiving some appreciation for their hard work. If they are given plenty of negative comments straight away, it would be like a blow to their heads and they may feel rather frustrated, because they would think they have been a fool by devoting weeks of time to creating something useless, which would make them lose the confidence to do this kind of task completely. However, a positive feedback first can go quite well with their proudness and give them a feeling that they do have achieved something and all their time and effort is well-spent, which gives them enough confidence to make improvement.
