Whenever there is an empty public space in a town, there always tends to be a lot of discussion and controversies around how this land should be used. Some people argue that it is essential to add greenery, some claim that public entertainment is most appealing, while others believe that we should build a sports field — especially when the local high school has no gym for students. In my opinion, entertainment facilities that include greenery — the gardens, for example —are the best option, for it not only offers a socializing and relaxing space but also improves the local environment

Firstly, public entertainment facilities are perfect socializing space and one of the best solutions to the lack of bonding within communities. In the past, as my mom told me, people all had a close relationship with other community members. They would drop by neighbors randomly for an afternoon tea talk and watch movies together on summer nights. Nowadays, however, more high buildings are built up and more people are living in blocks of apartment that has very few common spaces. Also, as the competition for resources like jobs and schools intensifies, people now have more peer and family pressure but less time to hang out with neighboring friends. All of these point to the importance of a public entertainment space. In my neighborhood, for example, a new garden was built last year. People are willing to walk five minutes over and stay there to chat for half an hour after dinner. They gossip about friends and celebrities while also talk about political and social issues like the recent Hong Kong protest and China-US trade war. People make new friends and that garden always bears popularity since its opening.

Secondly, public entertainment spaces like gardens also bring great benefits to the living environment. Although more living estates are built nowadays, less communities have as much greenery as in the past— when we look out of the windows, we can only see buildings and skyscrapers rather than trees and flowers; the color tone is always the foggy grey instead of the healthy green. This lack of greenery results from the environmental damage on earth and contributes to the intensifying global warming, which may eventually lead to extinction of species, rising sea level and less and less inhabitable areas. This is an irreversible problem and the only thing we can do is to let it slow down by starting with small — and a garden in community is a perfect example. Trees in the garden can not

Raising social welfares of citizens is what the government should be responsible for. In this case, there occurs to be a controversy whether investing to a public garden available for everyone in the town is more important than constructing a sports field for the nearby high school. From my perspective, the latter one is clearly more indispensable and I will explain it with the following reasons and examples.

For one thing, building a sporting field can satisfy students’ basic needs of both releasing academic pressure and strengthening their physical quality. To be specific, current students suffer from enormous academic burden and their tight learning schedule will drive them to be mentally and physically fatigued. Besides, the sedentary lifestyle, coincident with less healthy dietary structure, would result in physical deficiencies. All those would demonstrate the necessity of engaging in sporting activities as frequently as possible to improve their physical health and alleviate the tremendous pressure. For instance, high school students can join in the basketball matches of intense physical confrontation to practice their physical flexibility and agility and running marathon is an effective way of enhancing their cardiovascular system, meanwhile, this kind of aerobic activity would practice high school students’ stamina. Additionally, being fully preoccupied in the sports can temporarily separate them from whatever kind of troubles happen to them to release their heavy burden. As a result, the dominance of constructing a sporting field for high school students is stark.
