High school serves as a bridge between basic education and higher education. Most students start to prepare for their application to universities as soon as they are enrolled in High schools. Thus it is natural for people to be concerned about the quality of teachers in high schools. Some people point out that high school teachers should spend time helping those in need and others may argue that teaching students how to learn outside the classroom is more critical. However, from my perspective, the ability to help students plan for their future is actually the most important thing for high school teachers.

To begin with, making up plans can give students motivation. When students just enter high school, if their teachers could help them plan for their future, they will definitely be more motivated to work harder, which will be more likely to make them realize their dreams. For example, with the help of his/her teacher, a student may decide to apply for Harvard University which he/she likes a lot and where he/she really wants to study. Because Harvard University is a prestigious school and requires high SAT grades and high GPA, this student will know that he/she needs to work hard. Or else, he/she won’t be able to realize his/her dream. Consequently, he/she may be found studying day and night in the library and contribute a lot of efforts to completing his/her projects, which is not possible without motivation.

Moreover, spending much time helping those in need may be unfair to other students.Teachers have limited time and energy. If they are asked to help those students who are believed to need help, they will surely have less time left for other students, which may create unfairness, since other students still need teachers’ attention and help. For example, besides teaching and preparation for classes, a teacher may have about 4 hours for answering questions. It used to be that the four hours should be given to every student equally.
